See for yourself

What’s keeping you from the Word?

Today, apparently, it’s my girls.

Specifically: one lap desk, one clip-on light they despise, and a small dog who decided the book of Job would make an excellent pillow.

There will always distractions and things that clamor for our time, our attention, our energy.

Even good things. Especially them, sometimes.

But time in the Word is never wasted time.
It is time that steadies us.
Grounds us.
Grows us.
Heals us.

It reminds us of who we are and why we’re here.

It has been my salvation on more days, and in more ways, than one. Psalm 119:92 says, “Unless Your word had been my delight, I would have perished in my affliction.”

𝐼𝑛𝑑𝑒𝑒𝑑.

God’s word first introduced me to Jesus. I fell in love with Him and never looked back. Then it spoke to me, both comforting and confronting.

𝐼𝑡 𝑠𝑡𝑖𝑙𝑙 𝑠𝑝𝑒𝑎𝑘𝑠.

It speaks of promise and provision.
Of hope and healing.
Of rest and redemption.
Of grace and gratitude.

It speaks peace to my fragile heart, and it beckons me to more.

𝐼𝑡 𝑓𝑒𝑒𝑙𝑠 𝑙𝑖𝑘𝑒 𝑐𝑜𝑚𝑖𝑛𝑔 ℎ𝑜𝑚𝑒 𝑎𝑔𝑎𝑖𝑛. Every single time.

Mindful that with God, class is always in session, today I choose to see these pictures—my girls objecting to the light, one of them stretched out across my open Bible—as a living parable taking shape right here in my den.

Kind of like this: God’s word calls to us, but we resist it, or forgo it altogether. Maybe we’re not ready for the light and all it might reveal. All it might require of us.

But then we remain. We taste. We savor. We settle. We find ourselves comforted by the very thing we first resisted, as it speaks life to us, as it offers peace and hope and joy the world cannot give, as it begins to illuminate what once felt murky and uncertain.

And eventually… we rest.

We can learn today from Sadie. I do think she may be on to something.

There is just something holy about resting on the Word, and letting it hold us, rather than trying so hard to hold everything else.

𝑆𝑒𝑒 𝑓𝑜𝑟 𝑦𝑜𝑢𝑟𝑠𝑒𝑙𝑓. You’ll be glad you did.

Thy words were found, and I did eat them; and thy word was unto me the joy and rejoicing of mine heart: for I am called by thy name, O Lord God of hosts.
