A theme seems to be emerging: 🥰 Sweet little Sadie resting upon the Word of God. She has yet to be transformed by it in any way, whatsoever. 🤦🏼♀️ She refuses to share her toys (she won’t even let Lexi near the Bible) and she’s still quite willful. In Austin’s words, regarding our dear, departed Sophie, “There has been no life change.” 😳
Seriously, though, if there’s any hope for her (or us) at all, it is to be found within the covers of this book she uses for a pillow.
The transformational power of God’s word in a life is unparalleled. It never leaves us the same. It alters us for the better. It is a vital tool in God’s arsenal, used to shape us, and grow us up, into who we were always meant to be.
Hebrews 4:12 is frequently quoted regarding this magnificent book. “For the word of God is quick and powerful and sharper than any two-edged sword” (and that’s where most people leave off, but I think the most important part of that verse is at the end, because it goes on to say), “piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit and of the joints and marrow and is a 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐫 of the thoughts and intents of the heart.”
God’s word is like a mirror held to our souls. It pierces deep down, where no one else sees, and reveals to us areas in our lives that are weak, and lacking, and in need of repair. God’s word removes our scales, illuminates our minds, and opens our eyes to the things in our lives that need attention.
Have you ever heard the saying, “It’s good for what ails you?” Well, so it is with God’s word.
I learned something interesting about this verse years ago, that I never forgot. The Greek word for “powerful,” as it is used in Hebrews 4:12, was used almost exclusively to refer to medical treatment and the influence of medicine.
Do you see the implications? Because they are 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐠𝐠𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠! God’s word diagnoses the problem. It is a diagnostic tool. But the most amazing thing about the whole thing is this: He uses that very same tool, (the powerful word of God) to then treat the problem!
It diagnoses, and it treats. It reveals, and it heals. It exposes our maladies, then restores us to health. “He sent His word, and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions.” God’s word is the balm for our wounds. It is the bandage for our hurts. It is the remedy for our agony, but sadly, often sits idle and unused, while we spend our days writhing in pain.
It doesn’t have to be so. God cannot heal us, He cannot transform us through His word, if we’re never 𝐢𝐧 His word, so, if you are not currently hungering for, or availing yourself to, God’s word, first of all pray for that hunger, and then just open it up. Give it a chance. Taste and see for yourself.
And no matter how much time has elapsed since you last picked it up, I promise you, it will feel like coming home again. It always does, because He meets us there.
I love His promises. I love His principles. I love His precepts. I love His word.
There is one primary, preeminent reason for all of that. God’s word introduced me to Jesus. On the pages of Scripture, I met, and fell in love with, Jesus, my peace, my portion, and my Redeemer. My life has never been the same.
When all is said and done, I think Sadie may just be on to something.
“Thy words were found, and I did eat them; and Thy word was unto me the joy and rejoicing of mine heart: for I am called by Thy name, O Lord God of hosts.”
