Grief’s continuum | Beverly Carroll

Grief’s continuum

Grief breaks you,
then it alters you,
then it transforms you,
then it breaks you…
and so forth and so on.

Grief breaks you,
shattering all you once knew,
scattering the pieces of a life
that now exists only in your memories.

Then it alters you,
carving itself into your bones,
robbing you of your breath,
replacing the familiar with the unrecognizable.

Then it transforms you,
turning the ruins into something new,
threading light through the cracks,
weaving sorrow into something softer,
something…transcendent.

Then it breaks you again,
because love never wanes,
never dims, never leaves.
And neither does the ache of absence.

So I sit, once again, in the aftermath,
gathering what remains…
trying to be whole in a world
that no longer holds him.

Do you feel this too, my fellow broken and bereaved? I have nothing profound to offer today, just this assurance—You are not alone. Your sorrow is sacred. Your courage, unmatched. Praying peace for you today.
